Alan Sillitoe dies, aged 82

Alan Sillitoe has died at the age of 82.

The author's family confirmed that he had passed away at London's Charing Cross Hospital, BBC News reports.

Sillitoe was best known for his stories Saturday Night and Sunday Morning and The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner, which were made into classic 1960s British films directed by Karel Reisz and Tony Richardson respectively

His son David said the hoped his father would be remembered for his contribution to literature.

Journalist Christopher Hitchens told The Mirror: "Alan Sillitoe will be remembered as long as there are rebels - preferably, but not necessarily, rebels with causes. "
