Still Walking (2009)

A very quiet drama of family turmoil directed by Hirokazu Koreeda (After Life). In Still Walking, Ryoto (Hiroshi Abe), an out-of-work art restorer who thinks of himself as a failure, pays a visit to his disapproving father and even more henpeckish mother on the 15th anniversary of their eldest son's death. Koreeda is working in the quotidian, enormous-changes-at-the-last-minute spirit of Tokyo Story and Junebug, and though he has made a film of droll and dry observational precision, its emotional minimalism is almost fetishistic — and, by the end, a tad frustrating.
