Catherine Zeta-Jones makes first public outing

Catherine Zeta-Jones has appeared in public for the first time since being treated for bipolar II disorder.

The actress, who is married to Michael Douglas, spent five days at the Silver Hill psychiatric hospital in Connecticut from April 6 for the treatment.

This weekend, she visited a village close to her £5m US holiday home with her seven-year-old daughter Carys. Her parents are thought to have flown to Connecticut to support her.

A local told the News of the World: "Catherine looked in astonishing shape considering she's been through such a tough time.

"Her daughter was clearly delighted to be with her, and was chatting away with her. They looked so happy together. It shows what a strong woman she is.

"People didn't pester her. She looked great - very together and beautiful. No one would have imagined that just a few days ago she was in a treatment centre."

Zeta-Jones has been praised by celebrities including Demi Lovato for seeking help.

Catherine Zeta-Jones treated for bipolar disorder

Catherine Zeta-Jones's representative has revealed that the star sought treatment for bipolar disorder at a health facility.

Bipolar disorder, otherwise known as manic-depressive disorder, brings about unusual changes in mood and energy that can result in manic episodes - an overly excitable state - or depressive episodes - a state of heightened sadness.

A representative for the actress released a statement saying: "After dealing with the stress of the past year, Catherine made the decision to check in to a mental health facility for a brief stay to treat her Bipolar II disorder."

The statement continued: "She's feeling great and looking forward to starting work this week on her two upcoming films."

Bipolar II disorder is not regarded to be as severe as Bipolar I disorder. The actress spent five days in the facility, according to People.

A source close to Zeta-Jones said that the star has had a stressful year, largely due to her husband Michael Douglas being diagnosed with throat cancer.

"Catherine has had to deal with Michael's illness and that's been hard. She went in for a few days because she's about to start working, and wanted to make sure she's in top form, which she is," the insider explained.

Zeta-Jones recently insisted that Douglas is making a speedy recovery following his cancer battle.

Catherine Zeta-Jones 'wont leave Douglas again'

Catherine Zeta-Jones has reportedly attempted to cancel all upcoming work commitments in order to care for sick husband Michael Douglas.

The Chicago actress, who cut short a trip to the Ryder Cup in order to return to her 66-year-old partner's side, is said to be desperately trying to avoid abandoning Douglas again while he undergoes treatment for throat cancer.

A family friend told the News of the World: "We are now gravely concerned about Michael's condition. All Catherine cares about is being with him and the kids.

"She had to go to Wales because of a contract. She didn't want to leave her husband, and in the end the separation was too much for her to cope with. She's a complete mess as you'd expect."

The source added that Zeta-Jones has managed to remain resilient throughout the ordeal thanks to the love of her family and the bravery that her husband continues to display.

"They are with her full-time at the moment to give her as much support as possible. Pat (Zeta-Jones's mother Patricia Fair) has been saying, 'I've never seen her like this. She's so upset.'

"Catherine is now doing everything possible to get out of having to travel again. She has one more event, in China. We're hoping the organisers will show some sympathy and let her stay with Michael. Catherine is taking a lot of strength from how brave he's being."

Zeta-Jones 'apologises for crass speech'

Catherine Zeta Jones has apologised for her "crass" acceptance speech at the Tony Awards on Sunday night.

The star won the 'Best Leading Actress' prize at Radio City Music Hall for her turn in A Little Night Music on Broadway.

When picking up the gong, Zeta-Jones pointed at her husband Michael Douglas and said: "See that man there? He's a movie star and I get to sleep with him every night."

According to Sky News, she later said: "It wasn't the most elegant thing to say, was it? I was so caught up in the moment I don't think I knew what I was saying. I had no control of what was coming out of my mouth.

"Standing up there I felt speechless, but obviously I said something, but it was such a surprise that my brain didn't really connect to my mouth."

She added: "What I said about Michael was heartfelt. Although thinking about it now I can't believe I said something as crass as that.

"Boy, I could have said something worse and then I'd really be in trouble. Mind you, the problem with saying that I get to sleep with Michael every night is that it was done on television and it's on tape forever."
