'One Day' feels like it lasts years and years

Vague approximation of a guy meets sketchy notion of an intelligent woman, and then they spend two decades circling each other for no apparent reason. It's not exactly "boy meets girl," but that's the best that the new romance "One Day," based on a best-selling novel that I have not read, has to offer.

Author David Nicholls may have made these characters more substantial on the page, but in the big-screen adaptation (which he wrote), the leads are so lightweight and barely-there that a stiff
breeze in the projection booth could make them disappear entirely.

And since the whole movie is about the two of them and whether or not they ever get together, that's kind of a problem.

On July 15, 1988, Emma (Anne Hathaway) and Dexter (Jim Sturgess) hook up at the end of a drunken night celebrating their graduation from college. (Sorry, university: They're supposed to be from the UK, although if you didn't get that from Hathaway's vague accent, you're not alone.)

What's supposed to be a booty call gets terribly awkward -- she puts Tracy Chapman's "Talkin' 'bout a Revolution" on as mood music, he gets dressed to leave while she's prepping in the bathroom -- and then leads to what will become a lifelong friendship.

And so, we check in with these two every July 15 and observe the passage of time and the ups and downs of their lives.

Emma spins her wheels waiting tables at a Mexican restaurant and dating an untalented would-be stand-up comic (Rafe Spall), while Dex becomes a D-bag television personality and all-around shallow jerk. (One of the laziest tropes in contemporary fiction is to make one of your characters become famous, and "One Day" does it twice, as Emma eventually blossoms into a successful author of young-adult fiction, complete with Audrey Hepburn-esque makeover.)

Along the way, characters die, relationships begin and fall apart, but Emma and Dex somehow stay close and keep their unrequited love burning between them. But why, exactly?

"One Day" never bothers to spell out for us just who these people are, what they want, or why they do what they do. So it's next to impossible to get revved up about their feelings for each other, except for the fact that Emma and Dex are the principal characters, and they're being played by attractive, charismatic performers.

Nicholls' wafer-thin screenplay eventually beats down both Hathaway and Sturgess, who try desperately to give this couple something approximating depth.

And the whole same-time-next-year business -- which must have worked on the page, since the novel was huge with the book-club set -- winds up feeling gimmicky and pointless.

Jumping through the turn of the 21st century was no doubt lots of fun for the hair and wardrobe department -- Hathaway spends the first chunk of the film being frumped up with unflattering glasses and outfits, but Sturgess goes from posh preppy to '90s fashion victim, sporting an array of looks you'd prayed would never return.

(If only any of Sturgess' lines had been as interesting as his hairdos.)

The music supervisor had a bit of a lark as well, throwing in Clinton-era jams from the likes of Fatboy Slim and Del Amitri, with some Robbie Williams karaoke thrown in once the film makes it to the 2000s.

But there's only so much fun to be had with "Jurassic Park" references, denim vests, and "Sowing the Seeds of Love."

Rather than tell a story that would organically elicit certain emotions, it feels like Nicholls and director Lone Scherfig ("An Education") want us to yearn wistfully here and tear up there, and then they set out to create moments that would hit those marks. So we're left with a plot that feels forced (and subsequently predictable) being acted out by ciphers.

Patricia Clarkson, as Dex's mother, shines brightest among the cast, even though she's saddled with a thankless role that's all wise advice and the stoic avoidance of tears in a time of crisis. She's taken the pudding cup the movie gives her and somehow transforms it into chocolate mousse.

The people behind "One Day" no doubt thought that the passing of the years within the story would be a potent reminder of how life slips right by us, but the more likely response is along the lines of, "Ugh, it's only 2008? Is this movie ever going to be over?" (Reuters). Celebrities Pictures Galleries

Goldberg criticises Franco and Hathaway

Whoopi Goldberg has criticised James Franco and Anne Hathaway's Sunday night Oscar hosting presentation.

Speaking on Monday's episode of The View on ABC, Goldberg said that Franco and Hathaway failed to take charge of the awards show.

"You've got to get people who understand a live show," Goldberg said.

She added: "The first few minutes of that show is yours. You have to recognise two things. You have to recognise - like after Melissa Leo said [the f-word]... when things happen like that you have to be able to come and lift the audience out of their shock and move the show forward. I felt like last night there was no-one in charge."

The comedian continued: "I like James Franco a lot. I like Anne Hathaway a lot. But this is a show that, it's on you to keep it going. It's on you. You have to be able to surf in this show. And I didn't think they surfed as much as they could have."

Goldberg has hosted the Oscars four times.

The New Catwoman In Batman Series

Director Christopher Nolan is all set to continue his Batman saga and he has searched a new Catwoman for his third movie. The new girl is none other than this year's Academy Award hostess Anne Hathaway.

Anne is the latest entry in the Catwoman league, which is made popular by the actresses like Eartha Kittm, Michelle Pfeiffer and Halle Berry.

The first Batman movie, which was made in 1966, had actress Lee Meriwether in the role of Catwoman. Since then, many other Batman movies followed and other actresses kept adding in the role of Catwoman. However, the charm of the movie was never lost and Christopher Nolan again revived the saga in 2005 and made two movies on it. The Dark Knight Rises is the third in the series by Nolan. He is planning to release it on July 20, 2012.

We believe Anne will bring a new look and charm to everyone's favourite character 'Catwoman'. She has reportedly bagged the role by beating other top actresses like Natalie Portman, Keira Knightley, Rachel Weisz and Marion Cotillard.

Hopefully, Nolan will continue the charm of his earlier film with this latest venture with a new 'Catwoman' in the line.

Hathaway 'shared sex stories with Gyllenhaal'

Anne Hathway has said that she and Jake Gyllenhaal shared erotic stories during the production of Love & Other Drugs.

In an interview with the Daily Mirror, Hathaway suggested that the two stars had to develop an intimacy in order to make the movie's love scenes seem authentic.

"We had to go to a lot of emotionally and physically vulnerable places and we spent a lot of time rehearsing," she said. "We watched a lot of love scenes that have been done throughout film history and talked about which ones we liked and which ones we didn't."

The actress added that she found it helpful to swap tales of past sexual experiences with her co-star.

She explained: "We talked about our own experiences with love and intimacy, about what turned us on and what didn't. So it was completely open from the get-go. Jake described it as a kind of intellectual orgy and I think that sums it up best."

Love & Other Drugs is now playing in US and UK cinemas.

Gyllenhaal, Hathaway go nude for magazine shoot

Hollywood actors Anne Hathaway and Jake Gyllenhaal have stripped for a magazine cover and given some candid shots to promote their upcoming comedy "Love & Other Drugs".

The actors are seen in a jolly mood, and Gyllenhaal has his arms wrapped around Hathaway for three different covers, reports dailymail.co.uk.

They also had a few steamy scenes in the film, and Hathaway says she "totally fell apart" the first time they were expected to take their clothes off.

She shared how director Edward Zwick took off his clothes as well and climbed into bed with both actors to lighten the mood while shooting the sex scenes.

But the actors gradually became used to nudity in the film, says Gyllenhaal.

"We were, like, having fake sex and being like, 'Knock the pot off, knock the pot off'. I was not focusing on her at all and instead focusing on knocking the pot off for Ed (the director)," he added.

Gyllenhaal, 29, and Hathaway, 28, play respectively a Viagra pharmaceutical sales representative and a free-spirited woman in the film.

According to Gyllenhaal, they were naked 65 percent of the time while shooting the project.

Hathaway wants to finish college

Hollywood actress Anne Hathaway wants to take an extended break from acting so that she can finish her college degree.

"I finished two years and I'm hoping that I get back. The last time I went to college was in between 'Brokeback Mountain' and 'The Devil Wears Prada' and I've been really busy," Hathaway said.

The actress put her Hollywood career on hold to take English classes at New York University, but then left her studies to shoot the 2006 movie "The Devil Wears Prada". And now she wants to go back to school to learn more about her new interests - poetry and philosophy.

Nude Hathaway, Gyllenhaal asked new film's director to strip as well!

Anne Hathaway and Jake Gyllenhaal made director of their latest film go nude, so that they could feel comfortable in the buff.

Hathaway asked Edward Zwick to strip to ease her nerves while doing a nude scene with Gyllenhaal for 'Love and Other Drugs'.

"I said, "What do you want me to do?"" he said, according to nymag. "And they said, "You take your clothes off.""

He soon got into bed with the two stars and posed for photographs to lighten the mood.

"The art director stripped me out and put Annie''''s head on Jake''''s shoulder, and that''''s the movie poster," the Daily Telegraph quoted him as saying.

In Vogue''''s November issue, Hathaway revealed the tough time she had going nude for film.

The 27-year-old 'Rachel Getting Married' star said she 'totally fell apart' during the shoot, until Zwick acted on their advice.

LaBeouf, Hathaway best value actors in Hollywood

Shia LaBeouf, star of the Transformers movies, has topped a list of Hollywood best value actors with Anne Hathaway following second.

The best value actor in Hollywood, for the second year running, was LaBeouf, 24. His films had big budgets but took in a huge total of 2.6 billion pounds ($3.5 billion) at the global box office. They made a profit of 81 pounds for every 1 pound the actor was paid.

Hathaway topped in the actress' category and second overall on the list. Her films made a profit of 64 pounds for every 1 pound she was paid.

Shia LabeoufThat was mainly due to the success of Alice in Wonderland, in which she played the White Queen. The film made more than 650 million pounds ($1 billion) at the box office, making Hathaway better value than actresses who receive bigger amounts such as Julia Roberts and Angelina Jolie.

Daniel Radcliffe, the star of Harry Potter, came third. For every 1 pound, the 21-year-old star made personally his films earned 61 pounds.

Although his salary has increased recently, he was said to still be considered an excellent bet for studios hoping to make money, reports telegraph.co.uk.

Actors were rated on how much profit their films made compared to their salaries in a list compiled by Forbes magazine. The figures will be keenly studied by studios struggling to pay out the huge amounts required to cast some major stars.

In order to qualify for the list, actors had to have starred in at least three movies over the past five years, each of which must have shown in more than 500 cinemas.

The list marks a further setback for Hollywood’s so-called Twenty million dollar club, the group of stars who have been paid that much for a film.

Amid the economic downturn studios moved toward casting actors who demand a lower salary in major roles, and vehicles for some of the biggest stars flopped. Robert Downey Jr, whose career imploded amid drug problems in the 1990s, is now considered one of the best value actors in Hollywood.

His success in films including Sherlock Holmes and Iron Man 2 made him the fourth best investment for studios. A surprise inclusion on the list was Jennifer Aniston, who was tied in sixth place with Meryl Streep.

Aniston suffered a huge flop with Love Happens but her film The Bounty Hunter made 88 million pounds ($136 million) with a relatively modest budget. Overall, her films made a profit of 21 pounds for every 1 pound she earned.

Anne Hathaway gets boycut

Hollywood beauty Anne Hathaway has chopped off her long locks for a short cropped hairstyle.

The Oscar nominated actress got the hair cut in preparation for her new film One Day. The 27-year-old star was spotted on the movie set in Paris with the boyish haircut, swept off to the side, reported Huffington Post online.

Anne Hathaway boy cutFrom long waves to straight strands and a 'pob', the Valentine's Day actress has experimented with many hairstyles over the years, but has never cut her hair this short. The brunette beauty had also gone platinum blonde for her role as the White Queen in Alice in Wonderland.

In the romantic comedy, Hathaway plays Emma who meets Dexter during their graduation in 1988 and reunites with him one day each year for the next 20 years. And Hathaway is not Hollywood's only leading lady to go for a short crop these days. Also taking the plunge recently was Emma Watson, Cate Blanchett, Michelle Williams and Carey Mulligan.

Anne Hathaway’s New Beau Accused Of Theft

Having had her fair share of disappointments, Anne Hathaway hasn’t been all that lucky in love.

A New York contractor yesterday agreed not to file charges on the “Bride Wars” star’s new boyfriend, Adam Shulman, as long as he returned “stolen” artwork he took from a Meatpacking District construction site.

An alert Post photographer caught Shulman taking down a mural painted by street artist Mr. Braidwash, while joined by a friend on Saturday.

Ken Hart, president of H&H Builders, said the mural is his property. "If he brings me back the art, it's over," Hart said. "But if he doesn't, I'm going to the police to report it stolen!"

The news comes as it’s well-known that Hathaway’s previous man, Raffaello Follieri, is in jail for a scam that took millions from unsuspecting investors who thought he had connections to the Vatican.

Anne Hathaway Almost Shows Tits

When you think of Anne Hathaway you think beautiful, talented and smart. But usually her name is not followed or preceded by the word sexy.

That's about to change though. Anne Hathaway is on the cover of the March edition of GQ England looking ravishingly sexy. The accompanying article and pictorial include photos of the actress in tight shorts and a bra, and a black corset and lace panties.

Without a doubt, Anne looks her best in the corset photos, where she pushes her top so low that she almost shows her tits ("almost" being the keyword here). The photographer must've had a heck of a time getting that corset to go down that much without actually showing any nipple, though!
