Konnie Huq, the former Blue Peter presenter, has admitted that her father hoped she would marry a Muslim rather than fellow broadcaster Charlie Brooker.
Huq is the only one of her three sisters not to have had an arranged marriage, and said that it took her family time to accept her choice of husband.
She said: "Because my parents are Muslim, there's no doubt they wished I would marry someone Muslim.
"My parents really wanted me to have an arranged marriage when I was younger, but I think they have updated a bit with the times.
"I know they were worried that I was getting on a bit – I was 35 and unmarried – and were wondering if I would ever get married.
"If I were a boy, my career would have been more important to them, as I'd need to support my wife and children.
"The one thing more important to my parents than my career is that I am happily married."
In a revealing father-daughter interview, her father Muhammad, added that he "couldn't care less" about his daughter's career – and it is more important to him that she is a wife and mother.
Muhammad, 74, who is suffering from prostate cancer, said: "It is most important to me that my daughters marry.
"As for their careers, I couldn't care less. I see family as the be-all and end-all. It is the root of everything.
"It doesn't bother me that millions watch Konnie on TV.
"In the old days, we watched her all the time, but then we stopped. We don't care anymore. Nowadays, we only sometimes watch."
Huq announced her engagement to Brooker, the host and writer of BBC's Screenwipe, in June.

I hate fake nude pictures
Konnie Huq has revealed that she hates the fake nude photographs of her that are circulating the internet.
In an interview with The Guardian, she claimed that her head has been put onto the body of glamour model Vida Guerra.
Asked what makes her unhappy, she said: "Someone has cut and pasted my face on the head and body of an American glamour girl (Guerra). I hate it! It is all over the net."
Speaking of her most embarrassing moment, she added: "I was going to an event, and the inner lining of my skirt travelled upward due to static when I walked.
"Someone took a photo and about a millimetre of my knickers showed. Because parliament was in recess and I'm an ex-Blue Peter presenter, this was apparently news."

Konnie Huq, Charlie Brooker marry in Vegas
Presenter Konnie Huq has reportedly married Charlie Brooker in Las Vegas.
According to The Mail On Sunday, the pair flew to the American city ten days ago in between Huq's filming of The Xtra Factor. It is claimed that they wanted to keep the ceremony private.
A source said: "Charlie didn't want a big, tacky celebrity wedding because he doesn't see him and Konnie as a celebrity couple.
"They are very much in love but when it came down to it, he wanted the wedding to be low-key. He is finding it hard to accept the level of interest in their relationship. If it was up to him, they would lead a totally private life, enjoying playing PlayStation games at home together and eating in.
"But it is different for Konnie. She is used to all the attention her job brings her and doesn't mind being in the public eye. Charlie gets frustrated when people are surprised that they are together.
"He doesn't understand why it is an issue. He knows that she is beautiful but he sees a different side of her that the public doesn't."
It was revealed in June that Huq and Brooker had got engaged after a secret nine-month relationship.
