Mariah Carey is new 'American Idol' judge

BEVERLY HILLS, California - Mariah Carey will join “American Idol” as a judge next season, Fox announced Monday, bringing her star power to the show that remains a ratings leader but has seen its viewership and pop culture status diminish.

“I am so excited to be joining ‘Idol,’” said Carey, addressing the Television Critics Association via Fox entertainment chief Kevin Reilly’s cell phone, which he put on speakerphone for the hotel ballroom meeting.

She couldn’t be on hand with the group because “this kind of all just happened really quickly,” Carey said in her brief remarks. “I can’t wait to get started in the fall... and I will see you in January.”

The show, which saw judges Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez exit at the end of last season, will be back on the air for season 12 in January.

Reilly called Carey “the biggest recording artist that any of these (talent) shows has ever had,” adding that she was the “artist that many of these contestants have tried to emulate, have tried some of the songs, have tried to hit the notes.”

Playing the drama up, Reilly placed a call to Carey and put her on speaker.

“Hi, Mariah. How are you? It’s Kevin,” he said. “We do have a deal, don’t we? Yes!”

Reilly said he was “thrilled” to confirm reports that Carey was being courted by Fox and said the deal was freshly signed within the last few hours.

The Grammy-winning pop star is receiving just shy of $18 million a year for a one-year contract with a renewal option, according to a person familiar with the negotiations. The person, lacking authority to discuss the matter publicly, spoke on condition of anonymity.

The exit of Tyler and Lopez left original judge Randy Jackson and started a guessing game about potential replacements, with Carey at the top of the list.http://beta.philstar.com/new/cms/frame.aspx

As one of music’s best-selling singers, she could provide the clout “American Idol” needs to compete in an increasingly crowded talent show field. Besides Fox sibling “The X Factor,” which recently added Britney Spears and Demi Lovato as judges, there’s NBC’s “The Voice,” which boasts Christina Aguilera among its big names.

“Not being the only game in town now, we need to keep things fresh,” Reilly said. The search is on for a third judge, and he promised another impressive pick. It could a star or someone like music executive and “Idol” mentor Jimmy Iovine, who wasn’t a household name when he joined, Reilly said. But, he added, after 12 seasons “we need to have something to talk about.” Source:http://www.philstar.com

Mariah Carey, Nick Cannon reveal baby names

Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon have revealed the names of their newborn twins.

The 'We Belong Together' singer and America's Got Talent host Cannon welcomed a son and a daughter at a Los Angeles hospital over the weekend.

The boy has been named Moroccan Scott Cannon, while the girl is called Monroe Cannon, according to a post on Carey's official website.

The name Moroccan is in reference to the decor of a room in Carey's New York apartment, which is influenced by the country and also served as the setting for Cannon's proposal, while Scott is Cannon's middle name, says CNN.

Monroe is a tribute to the late Marilyn Monroe.

Carey had previously teased on Twitter that the children had both been given names beginning with 'M', inviting followers to guess the monikers. She also described the newborns, who arrived on her third wedding anniversary to Cannon, as "incredible gifts".

The couple, who married in the Bahamas, renewed their vows in the hospital with Reverend Al Sharpton shortly following the birth of their twins.

Mariah Carey giving birth to twins today?

Mariah Carey is said to be having her and husband Nick Cannon's twins today.

According to Extra, the 42-year-old booked a caesarean section to guarantee that she gives birth.

An insider claimed: "Hollywood baby bump watchers are whispering that the singer is scheduled to undergo a C-section at an L.A. area hospital on Friday."

Although the couple are yet to comment on the speculation, Cannon discussed the impending birth on The Talk yesterday.

The presenter admitted that Carey is ready to give birth, explaining: "How's [Mariah] doing? She's pregnant. She's doing amazing, but literally, it's any moment now. It's not even any day now… She is ready to just pop!

Mariah Carey 'loves looking at twins' nursery'

Mariah Carey has revealed that she is in awe of the nursery she has created for her forthcoming twin babies.

The singer, who is expecting a boy and a girl with husband Nick Cannon, said that she "loves" the room that she's decorated for them.

She told Life & Style: "I wanted to create a beautiful, tranquil, cosy environment for the babies. Everything matches, but pieces are individualised to celebrate the twins as separate entities.

"The ceiling has orangey-pink clouds in a blue sky with golden stars twinkling. It's based on two songs I wrote that are fan favourites, 'Underneath the Stars' and 'Close My Eyes'.

"Sometimes I just sit in the nursery and stare at the ceiling because I love it so much. To me, it symbolises wanting my children to dream as big as possible and to let their imaginations be unbridled."

Carey, who is expecting the twins to arrive within the next few weeks, hopes that she will learn from her kids.

She added: "Being a mother is probably the hardest job in the world. I feel like, in a lot of ways, children come into the world to teach us.

"It's going to be a delicate balance between raising them around glitz and glamour and keeping them grounded. One thing I'm sure of is that I'll be grateful for the twins every day, no matter what."

"It was something we did at home, in our bedroom - one light, nothing big, no hair and makeup ... And the pictures turned out so beautiful, we're like, 'the world should see this,' " Cannon added.

Cannon also participated in the photo shoot, but said he was less partial to his nude body being publicized.

"We didn't really want to talk about this yet, but I'm in the public eye and really didn't have a choice. So I'm just thankful I can go through this time and feel a lot of warmth. It's restored my faith in people a bit."

Mariah Carey 'in talks to get U.S. 'X Factor' slot over Cheryl Cole'

Mariah Carey is said to be in negotiations to become a judge on The US X Factor, shattering Cheryl Cole's dreams to build her profile in the US.

The 'Vision Of Love' singer is in talks to join the judging panel - ending months of speculation that Cheryl was a main contender for the role.

Mariah, 40, has told show bosses she will take the job if filming dates fit in with her work schedules.

Cowell was reported earlier this month of trying to persuade Fox TV executives that Cheryl was perfect for the show.

"Look, I've said I'd love Cheryl out there but whether it will happen, who knows?" the Mirror quoted him as saying last night.

"Mariah Carey would be an amazing addition to the US show. And she's exactly the right calibre of star that we want for the show.

"I can't say more because it's too early and I can't say. But there will be surprises," he said.

However, a source in the US reveals: "The Fox executives are totally against Cheryl joining the panel.

"Simon has put her forward and is trying to persuade them she's perfect for the job.

"But they're saying that together with her accent being difficult to understand, and nobody knowing who she is, she doesn't have the star qualities to draw in an audience.

"They are going to be competing with American Idol's star-studded panel of Aerosmith's Steven Tyler and J-Lo, and Cheryl just doesn't cut it compared to them. She's not a name.

"While Simon may want Cheryl he understands Fox's insistence that he delivers a strong panel to bring viewers, and therefore advertising, in and make as much money as they can," the source said.

The source adds: "Mariah Carey's people say she's fully behind the idea and they're very interested in taking talks further. Mariah has already had the initial meeting with Fox so she will more than likely take the spot Simon wanted for Cheryl."

According to Mr Perry, the film will be shot in New York City this summer for an expected release in late 2010 or early 2011.
