Marilyn Monroe 'may have been lesbian'

Marilyn Monroe, the world’s number one sex symbol and the most desirable woman on the planet, was not the man-eating siren that her image suggested, it has been revealed.

Fifty years after her death, an author who met the star has questioned her sexual identity.

Although she married and divorced three times, she was – though few people are aware of the fact – a lesbian by inclination.

She admitted to sexual encounters with actresses Joan Crawford, Barbara Stanwyck, Marlene Dietrich and Elizabeth Taylor, as well as with both her acting coaches, Natasha Lytess and Paula Strasberg.

Only a day before Jean Negulesco, who directed her in ‘How To Marry A Millionaire’, was due to visit her, Monroe was found dead.

"I still think I might have saved her if I could have got to her in time," the Daily Mail quoted him as saying.

"You know what was wrong with her, don’t you?

"Her whole existence was a search for identity, and her sexual identity was a complete lie.

"She told me once she had never had an orgasm with a man in her entire life," he said.

And yet Negulesco’s assertion is validated by the taped transcripts of Marilyn’s sessions of psychoanalysis with her psychiatrist, Dr Ralph Greenson, at the end of her life.

"What I told you is true when I first became your patient," she says in the transcripts.

"I had never had an orgasm. I well remember you said an orgasm happens in the mind, not the genitals.

"When I did exactly what you told me to do, I would have an orgasm?...? what a difference a word makes.

"You said I would, not I could. Bless you, doctor. What you say is gospel to me," she said.

Another of those who worked with Monroe, actress Celeste Holm, who appeared with her in ‘All About Eve’, and who died last Sunday, said that Marilyn’s sexual problems were rooted in her traumatic childhood.

Born illegitimately in 1926 to an unmarried mother in the charity ward of the Los Angeles General Hospital, she was originally known as Norma Jeane Mortenson, the child of a 24-year-old film negative cutter, Gladys Pearl Monroe Mortenson, who developed schizophrenia.

Both of Gladys’s parents, Otis Elmer Monroe and Della Monroe Grainger, lived out their twilight years in mental institutions, while Gladys’s brother, Marion, was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia.

So it is small wonder that the child who became Marilyn Monroe grew up with a deep-rooted fear of genetic insanity.

This, according to Celeste Holm, gave Marilyn a lifelong terror of pregnancy.

In addition to her fear of giving birth to an abnormal child, Marilyn suffered from devastating bouts of endometriosis, a gynaecological condition causing intense pelvic pain, severe cramps and painful periods.

It made normal sexual intercourse difficult and uncomfortable.

"Because of this Marilyn was never able to enjoy sex with men," Holm said.

"She was afraid of it, and turned to older women as sexual role models," she had said.

After Marilyn had become a world-famous sex symbol, her first husband, Jim Dougherty, who joined the Merchant Marine in 1943, would brag: "Never had I encountered a girl who so thoroughly enjoyed a sexual union. It made our lovemaking pure joy".

But this, sadly, was far from the truth.

"Jim told me privately that she spent most of their early marriage locked in the bathroom," Martin Evans, a friend of Jim’s at the time they married," said.

"She had sex books and manuals that were given to her, and none of them made a difference.

"She was scared. From my information, she even asked if it were possible for her to never have sex with Jim. "Could they just be friends?" she wondered.

"To be honest, I don’t think they had a good sex life ever – despite what Jim later claimed," he said.

According to Holm, for years Marilyn was in love with the idea of being Betty Grable – the Forties star known as the Girl With The Million Dollar Legs).

In 1969, Grable said me that she had found Monroe’s pursuit of her ‘sometimes scary, but you have to understand that all her problems had to do with her not being able to have a child.

Another female star Marilyn pursued and propositioned was Judy Garland, who married three gay men among her five husbands.

Shortly before Marilyn signed with Columbia Pictures in 1948, she met Natasha Lytess, a failed actress who was a drama coach at the studio.

"I want to recreate you. I shall mould you into the great actress I suspect you can be. But to do so, you must submit to me. Do you understand?" she told Marilyn.

In 1950, Marilyn moved into her apartment while she was being escorted by a new father-figure, the venerable Hollywood agent Johnny Hyde.

When Hyde died from a heart attack in December 1950, Natasha rescued Marilyn from a suicide attempt with a drug overdose.

Marilyn Monroe beckons film galaxy to Cannes 2012

PARIS: Druggy roadtrips, soul-searching drama and stylish gangland flicks go head to head on the French Riviera next week as a galaxy of stars and directors converge for the Cannes film festival.

David Cronenberg, Ken Loach and Michael Haneke headline the pick of 22 international filmmakers vying for the Palme d'Or award at the 65th edition of the world's top cinema showcase from May 16 to 27.

Star-wise, the 2012 line-up promises to dazzle with Nicole Kidman, Marion Cotillard, Jessica Chastain, Kylie Minogue, Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Brad Pitt just a few of the A-listers expected in town.

Hollywood icon Marilyn Monroe, who herself never walked the Cannes red carpet, was chosen as the face of this year's filmfest in a tribute 50 years after her death.

Palme d'Or-winner Nanni Moretti of Italy heads the jury, with help from eight jurors including the actor Ewan McGregor and fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier.

Festival general delegate Thierry Fremaux, who cherry-picked the selection from among almost 1,800 entries, was particularly excited about this year's American crop.

US director Wes Anderson strikes a joyous keynote with Wednesday's opening film "Moonrise Kingdom", a pre-teen elopement story whose star-packed cast includes Bruce Willis as a small-town cop.

Two US auteurs are running for Cannes gold: Lee Daniels' keenly awaited

The second is Jeff Nichols, whose "Mud", about two teenage boys who form a pact with a fugitive, was a surprise entry.

American stories loom large throughout the line-up, though often told by foreign directors.

Canada's Cronenberg brings Manhattan thriller "Cosmopolis", adapted from Don DeLillo's novel. It stars Robert Pattinson as a billionaire asset manager journeying through the city in a stretch limo.

Brazil's Walter Salles has adapted Jack Kerouac's cult novel "On the Road", while Australians John Hillcoat and Andrew Dominik bring two US-set works: bootlegging drama "Lawless" and the mobster flick "Killing Them Softly".

Among the European giants, Austria's Haneke will show "Amour" (Love), starring Isabelle Huppert as the daughter of a woman hit by a stroke.

In the absence of Lars Von Trier -- banned from last year's festival after incendiary remarks about Hitler -- fellow Dane Thomas Vinterberg injects a dose of icy Nordic drama with "The Hunt".

Britain's Loach returns for the 17th time with comedy "The Angel's Share", about ex-offenders who turn to whisky-making.

One of three French filmmakers in the race, Jacques Audiard has cast Cotillard as a killer-whale trainer hit by a tragedy in "Rust and Bone".

Romania's Cristian Mungiu, who scooped the 2007 Palme for a Communist-era abortion drama, returns with "Beyond the Hills" about two orphans, while Italian Matteo Garrone takes on TV culture with "Reality".

Asia gets a look-in with two South Koreans: Im Sang-soo with erotic thriller "Taste of Money", and Hong Sang-soo with "In Another Country".

And Palme-winning Iranian Abbas Kiarostami returns at 71 with "Like Someone in Love", a Japan-set tale about a student who works as a prostitute.

Cronenberg father and son will both be in Cannes, with Brandon Cronenberg showing his debut "Antiviral" in parallel new talent section "Un Certain Regard", chaired by British actor and director Tim Roth.

Seventeen directors show work in that section, including the only two women in competition.

Buzz-making films being screened out of competition include Philip Kaufman's "Hemingway and Gellhorn", with Kidman playing the writer's war reporter third wife opposite Clive Owen.

Likewise, a documentary on Roman Polanski, one about Woody Allen, and another about the Libyan war by French philosopher Bernard-Henri Levy.

"The Artist" star Berenice Bejo hosts the opening and closing ceremonies of the filmfest, which ends with Claude Miller's "Therese Desqueyroux", a tribute to the French director who had just finished editing it when he died last month.

Cannes triples in population during the festival to 200,000 people, with film buffs homing in on the competition and sidebar events Directors' Fortnight and Critics' Week, and 10,000 industry professionals attending a giant film market. (AFP)

Marilyn Monroe placed marbles in her bra

An exhibition in London has divulged the tricks Marilyn Monroe used for showcasing her distinctive looks and publicising her attractions.

The exhibition organised at the Getty Images Gallery - to mark the 50th anniversary of Marilyn Monroe’s death- has analysed 66 largely unseen Monroe images from its 90 million-strong archive, plus new video footage and 12 of her most memorable outfits, the Telegraph reported.

"She always wore a bra to bed because she didn’t want her breasts to sag," said Monroe expert Gene London.

"She was obsessed with Jean Harlow. When she learned that Jean put ice on her breasts to make them stand up, Marilyn tried that, but the only thing that happened was that her breasts turned blue.

"So, Marilyn took to placing marbles in her bras, or she’d take three buttons… and sew the buttons together and place those inside her dress."

Some of the other tricks the actors used included shaping her nose, sharpening her cheekbones, making her eyes look more deep-set, arching her brows, and emphasising her heart-shaped face.

A plumper and fuller pout was created using five different varieties of lipstick and gloss: darker reds on the outer corners, lighter shades in the middle to lend dimension, with a highlighted cupid’s bow and bottom lip.

Marilyn Monroe named Top Beach Body of all time

Marilyn Monroe has beaten Kim Kardashian, Kelly Brook and Christina Hendricks to be crowned the best beach body of all times, in a poll.

Monroe's curvaceous figure - which her dressmaker claimed measured 37-23-36 - is best seen in films such as 'Some Like It Hot' and 'The Misfits', in which she models an array of swimwear.

Debenhams, which commissioned the survey, now predicts a trend towards the fuller figure and last season it reported a 58 per cent increase in sales of bust-boosting bikinis.

"With the average cup size of the list going from a C to a D in just one year, they are proof that a voluptuous figure is even more desirable that ever before," the Daily Mail quoted Debenhams spokesperson Sasha Nagalingham as saying.

'And women want to imitate the look; sales of gel-filled bust-boosting bikini tops increased by 58 per cent last season and we have extended the range ready for the spring 2012 swell.

'Our results tell us that looking great on the beach is not about being the thinnest or the youngest woman around.

'Women are increasingly appreciative of figures that symbolise all the great things about womanhood," she said.

Others to make it on to the list of top ten were Christina Hendricks, Amy Childs and Kim Kardashian, all boasting cup sizes ranging from C to GG.

Marilyn Monroe's unseen 3D photos set to rake in 57 pound at auction

Marilyn Monroe’s unseen photographs showing the legendary screen icon living the high life at an exclusive celeb party are set to go under the hammer.

The images, which are valued at a staggering 57,000 pounds were clicked by amateur photographer Lani Carlson in San Diego in 1952.

Carlson was working as a sound engineer at legendary crooner Ray Anthony''s launch party for the hit song ‘Marilyn’, which was written by Ervin Drake and Jimmy Shirl.

As the show stopping Marilyn descended in a helicopter, the amateur snapper quickly used his new state-of-the-art camera to take these amazing images.

In one of the shots, Monroe can be seen posing for admirers in a vibrant pink cocktail dress in front of a giant sheet of music.

Others show her greeting Ray Anthony, the helicopter pilot and a four-legged fan.

Amazingly, the colour snaps were shot in 3D, meaning when seen through a special viewer they leap out of the page.

They were taken on a David White Stereo Realist Camera, a dual-lens point and shoot that creates a three-dimensional effect when seen through a special viewer, the Telegraph reported.

The 3D images will go under the hammer alongside the copyright to all ten stills on December 14 at Bonhams’ Entertainment Memorabilia auction in Los Angeles.

Marilyn Monroe's never seen before photographs exhibited in New York

Several never seen before photographs of Marilyn Monroe, are being featured in a new exhibit devoted to the legendary actress.

The exhibition titled ‘Picturing Marilyn’, opened on Thursday at the Milk Gallery in New York and is set to run through the weekend.

According to the organisers, it spans Monroe’s life in front of the camera lens, starting with her teenage years, when she was photographed on the beach by Andre De Dienes,

It was timed to coincide with the release of the film ‘My Week with Marilyn,’ which stars Michelle Williams as Monroe.

The exhibit is made up of more than 60 images of the actress, shot by some of the most famous photographers, including her photo shoot with Philippe Halsman for the Life magazine cover when she was 26 years old.

Co-organiser Bert Stern’s photograph of Monroe in a black Dior dress shot for Vogue magazine is the centrepiece of the show.

He also shot Monroe’s final portraits, a series known as “The Last Sitting,” in 1962.

In total Stern shot more than 2,500 images of Monroe, but has released only a few for public viewing.

Among other previously unseen images is a De Dienes shot taken of Monroe when she was 23 in a rare moment, where she was without make-up, the Telegraph reported.

Another picture from 1954, by Bruno Bernard, shows Monroe casually stretched out across rows of movie theatre seats and dressed in head-to-toe white.

Marilyn Monroe's 49th death anniversary

Yesterday, marked the 49th death anniversary of Marilyn Monroe, a model, actress and singer, who has an everlasting room in the mind of millions of movie lovers around the world. The magnificent artiste ended too early on August 5, 1962.

However, the earlier life of Marilyn Monroe was not as splendid as her artistic career. The great artiste was born on June 1, 1926 in Los Angles, California.

She never knew her father, and her mother Gladys, developed psychiatric problems and was eventually placed in a mental institution. Therefore, Monroe spent much of her time in foster care and in an orphanage.

In search of self dependency, Monroe went to work in a munitions factory where she was discovered by Army photographer David Conover. Her life was about to change when David encouraged her to apply to The Blue Book Modeling Agency. Eventually she became as one of the most renowned models of that agency.

Her successful modeling brought her close to Hollywood. But she only got a minor role of role as a telephone operator in her debut film The Shocking Miss Pilgrim.

The break through in Monroe’s career came in 1948, when she signed a six-month contract with Columbia Pictures, where she would act in movies like Ladies of the Chorus, The Asphalt Jungle and Love Happy. These movies were not so successful in terms of box office gains but they gave her the chance to sing a one year contact with 20th Century Fox.

The career of Monero was in full swing and in next few years she offered her fans some block buster films such as Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, How to Marry a Millionaire, River of No Return, The Seven Year Itch, Some Like It Hot, Let’s Make Love, There’s No Business like Show Business and many more.

Marilyn Monroe did not confined herself in modeling and acting only; as a singer, she rendered some timeless songs Every Baby Needs a Da-Da-Daddy, Ladies Of The Chorus, Kiss, Bye Bye Baby and many more.

Monroe’s career was glorious four time photography award, Henrietta Award, David di Donatello and many more. Moreover, she got Golden Globe and BAFTA nomination for once each.

The great artiste left her millions of her fans behind, when at the age of only 36, she was found dead in the bedroom of her Brentwood home. The cause of her death is still a mystery though what is absolute is her ever lasting legacy.

Marilyn Monroe subway dress sells for $4.6m

Marilyn Monroe's subway dress from The Seven Year Itch fetched $4.6 million (£2.8 million) at an auction of Hollywood costumes that took place over the weekend.

Considered one of the most recognisable costumes in movie history, the iconic ivory gown far exceeded sales expectations, according to Reuters. The dress was originally estimated to sell for only $1 million to $2 million (£618,000 to £1.2 million).

Monroe wore the dress in a scene in the 1955 movie in which the actress stands above a subway grate as a passing train raises it around her head.

The auction was held by actress Debbie Reynolds, who began collecting movie costumes in earnest in 1970. Reynolds planned to display the outfits in a museum, but was eventually forced to sell them in order to pay back creditors.

"Now everyone has the opportunity to own them," Reynolds said.

Other costumes that were sold included Monroe's red-sequinned dress from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Audrey Hepburn's Ascot dress from My Fair Lady, Judy Garland's blue cotton dress from The Wizard of Oz and Mike Myers's orange suit from Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me.

Megan Fox removing her Marilyn Monroe tattoo

Actress Megan Fox is removing her Marilyn Monroe tattoo, which is inked on her right forearm.

"I really admire Marilyn Monroe, but I would never try to emulate her. I got the tattoo as a warning. It warns me not to let myself be treated so badly by the film industry so that it breaks me down," femalefirst.co.uk quoted Monroe as saying.

At a recent party, the 24-year-old showed off her arm and some of the tattoo has disappeared already and all of it seemed a lot lighter than normal.

Marilyn Monroe's letter fetches USD 52460 in auction

The reign of Hollywood icon Marilyn Monroe still persists and this was proved once again as hand-written letter of the yesteryear actor fetched USD 52,460 in an auction conducted recently.

The letter was written by a newly married Monroe in the year 1942 to her foster mother Grace Goddard and narrated her life as a married woman.

The newly-married 16-year-old Monroe described that how her husband James Dougherty used to keep her busy with the regular house hold chores, but pampered her a lot as well.

The envelope of the eight-page letter with ‘Norma’ signed on it had a postage stamp which mentioned that the letter was sent by Monroe from Van Nuys area of California.

Monroe had later married Joe DiMaggio and renowned author Arthur Miller.

"It''s a huge pressure. We all feel we know her. I''m very, very scared about that," Contactmusic quoted her as saying.

Watts is not the only star to be portraying Marilyn in a movie about her life - Michelle Williams is also set to play her in ''My Week With Marilyn''.

Eternity With Marilyn Monroe: Sold for $4.6M

The L.A. Times and others are reporting that a woman auctioned off a particularly valuable but small piece of California real estate today. Elsie Poncher sold the crypt where her husband is currently interred, which happens to be directly above the final resting place of Marilyn Monroe.
Bidding started at $500,000 and closed today around noon EDT for $4,602,100.

That seems a bit high to us. We could understand paying that much if you wanted to be placed in the same crypt as Marilyn, but above her? There’s probably at least a few inches of metal and concrete separating you and your love goddess. You’d be spending eternity so close yet so far. Pure torture.
Not to mention the fact that Hugh Hefner is supposed to be buried right next to her, which means you’re probably going to have to endure frequent visits from a stream of buxom, platinum blonde, aging centerfold/bad reality show stars.

But you know who really gets the raw deal here? Ms. Poncher’s husband.
Richard F. Poncher was such a fan of Marilyn’s that he went out of his way to secure the crypt above hers (he bought the plot from Joe DiMaggio when he was in the middle of divorcing the diva in 1954). Furthermore, it is said that at his funeral in 1986, a group of his friends waited for everyone to leave and then turned his body over, so that for all eternity he would be lying face down on top of his idol.

Elsie Poncher confirmed the legend in the LA Times today.

“She said that when her husband was dying, he made a request. ‘He said, ’If I croak, if you don’t put me upside down over Marilyn, I’ll haunt you the rest of my life.’ Right after the funeral, Elsie said, she conveyed her husband’s wish to the funeral director. ‘I was standing right there, and he turned him over,’ she said.”

Elsie Poncher decided to sell the crypt to pay off a $1.6 million mortgage on her Beverly Hills home. She’ll move her husband to the crypt next to his current resting place (which he also bought from DiMaggio) and when the time comes she’ll be cremated.

It’s easy to understand why she doesn’t want to be buried with her husband under the circumstances. Not only would she have to play second fiddle to Marilyn, but Richard is bound to be plenty ticked off about being moved and who wants to spend eternity arguing? Although we understand his beef. He paid for eternity. All he got was 23 years.
