Miss Universe Australia unveils National Ccostume

Miss Universe Australia Scherri-Lee Biggs has unveiled the national costume she hopes will win her the crown at the world's most famous beauty pageant.

The 20-year-old model from Perth, who was crowned the winner of the Aussie segment of the international beauty pageant last month, said that she loves her "fun" outfit.

At the launch of the costume at the Sofitel in Melbourne earlier this week, Biggs unveiled a canary yellow swimsuit, multi-coloured cascading silk skirt and gold-plated headpiece all designed by Nikki Silverthorne from Kooey Swimwear.

Silverthorne told The Daily Telegraph that the design of the dress was inspired by Australia's "breathtaking" landscape, saying: "People have to remember it is a costume and it's about having fun."

Biggs added: "The bikini ties in the beach culture we love. I feel like I can work it."

The Miss Universe pageant took place in Brazil on September 12.

Last year's Miss Universe Australia Jesinta Campbell was criticised for wearing fur on her Ugg-inspired national costume.

Mexican Ximena Navarrete visits India

MUMBAI: Miss Universe Ximena Navarrete Rosete of Mexico is on her first visit to India for promoting designer Sanjana Jon's Celebrate The Girl Child Campaign.

She has been on a 10-day tour. She said that this is her first trip which is mostly time bound with prior commitments for work but soon she will visit India again on a leisure trip.

She also mentioned that she is meeting people and collecting few tips for her next trip, like where to go, what to do, so that she can come to India with all prior preparations done.

Miss Universe slammed for dress choice

Miss Universe New Zealand has been criticised for her choice of dress in the national costume category of the beauty pageant.

Ria van Dyke, who is currently in Las Vegas taking part in the international show, caused controversy by wearing a black dress by American designer Sherry Helen America.

The model did, however, wear a headpiece and cuffs designed by local designer Natalie Chan.

A director for the New Zealand section of the competition told AAP: "I was very upset about the fact that it was not a national costume. It was just a black dress with bling bling on it. Thank God we had a headpiece by Natalie Chan."

Van Dyke has previously said that she found it difficult to find enough clothes to take with her to the pageant.

Miss Universe says crown fulfills lifelong dream

NASSAU, Bahamas - The 2009 Miss Universe says her title fulfills a lifelong dream — and an improbable one for a girl who finished last in one of her first beauty pageants.

Stefania Fernandez, an 18-year-old Venezuelan, said Monday in an interview with The Associated Press that despite the rocky start, she continued competing in order to keep busy.

"I don't like to be at home doing nothing," Fernandez said. "I entered the world of 'misses,' and by chance life kept rewarding me bit by bit."

She moved from her hometown of Merida to the city of San Cristobal two years ago to pursue her increasingly successful pageant career, which culminated Sunday night when she edged the runner-up from the Dominican Republic to become the new Miss Universe.

Fernandez's win made Venezuela the first country to claim the title two years in a row, after Dayana Mendoza was crowned in 2008. She is also the sixth Miss Universe from the beauty-obsessed South American nation.

"Imagine what this means to me," said Fernandez, who wore a flowing green summer dress and gold-hoop earrings to the interview. "I'm making history in my country."

She said she does not expect that Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez — who did not congratulate Mendoza last year — will praise her as other leaders have done with winners from their countries. But perhaps fittingly for a beauty queen, she offered a diplomatic answer when asked her opinion of the socialist leader's policies.

"I think they are extreme measures, but I trust that little by little, Venezuelans will start understanding each other and try to make the country better. We are trying to communicate more with each other."

Fernandez will spend the next year traveling the world as an ambassador for the pageant, lending her celebrity to causes such as AIDS awareness.

Afterward she plans to go to college and specialize in communications, and is also interested in pursuing English and French.

"My house is covered with photos of me from Miss Venezuela and Miss Universe," Fernandez said. "But I promised my dad that my university degree would be up there too."

"Topless" Miss Universe Pics Revealed

In the new September issue of Maxim, Dayana Mendzoa bears her Miss Universe boobies!
The photos have just hit Maxim's online edition, and although she's topless, she somehow makes it look damn sexy and classy. And we use the word "topless" loosely as you can't really see any nudity!
She carefully covers the necessary parts with her arms and jewelry.
And here's some good news for the guys, when asked if she'd only date millionaires, Dayana responded, "No, he doesn’t have to be a soccer player or an actor, either. He just has to be a special guy who is very genuine."
But we're sure if he had some millions in the bank she wouldn't turn him away.
So, what do U think of her photos? Tasteful or tasteless?
We think she looks hawt!

Miss Universe visits Guantanamo Bay, says it's 'beautiful'

Wishing for world peace is so passe; nowadays Miss Universe can be found blogging about Guantanamo Bay.

"I didn't want to leave, it was such a relaxing place, so calm and beautiful," Dayana Mendoza gushed at the end of a five-day trip.

It may not be a sentiment that Binyam Mohamed would share about his time at the US base in Cuba, but then he wasn't buying souvenir necklaces to take home at the end of his four years of incarceration.

Ms Mendoza, a Venezuelan model, was crowned Miss Universe last summer.

Since then, she has clocked up stops in Indonesia, Spain, the Bahamas and Puerto Rico.

"This week, Guantanamo!!!" she trumpeted on her blog.

Her visit to the base was designed as a morale-boosting treat for troops.

"The first thing we did was attend a big lunch and then we visited one of the bars they have in the base. We talked about Gitmo and what it was like living there," wrote Ms Mendoza.

Other highlights included meeting the military dogs - who "did a very nice demonstration of their skills" - and a first-hand look at the detainee camps with their orange jump-suited inmates.

"We saw the jails, where they shower, how they recreate themselves with movies, classes of art, books," she said.

"It was very interesting."

For Cori Crider, who has represented more than 40 current and former Guantanamo prisoners, the Miss Universe visit was simply the "latest surreal chapter" in the history of the prison.

The human rights lawyer, who works for Reprieve, had just finished visiting an inmate, who had been shackled to the floor, and was driving back to her office when she saw a large crowd of jostling soldiers.

"At the centre of the uniform swarm was a shock of glossy hair and a brightly patterned top that looked more like one you'd wear on beach holiday, her hip was out, her arm around a Marine," said Ms Crider.

"It's obviously tempting to blame her for posing for a photo a stone's throw away from the isolation camps, but people don't think. They miss human suffering going on right under their nose."

Other human rights analysts expressed a certain amount of sympathy for the US troops, noting that Guantanamo is a tough assignment.

However, one person who is likely to be unimpressed with Ms Mendoza's visit is the Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.

He called to congratulate the Caracas-born model when she won the Miss Universe crown last July, but as an anti-US Cuba ally, he would certainly not approve of her fraternising with US soldiers at Guantanamo Bay.

Earlier this year Mr Chavez urged Barack Obama to not only make good on his pledge to close the prison there within 12 months, but to also return the land to Cuba.

The US took possession of the south-eastern corner of the island under a lease established after the 1898 Spanish-American War, and later agreed to rent the land in perpetuity for an annual fee.

However, since 1960, Cuba's government has refused to cash the cheques.

Ms Mendoza skates over this, noting she had seen "the division of Gitmo and Cuba" and that the Marines "informed us with a little bit of history".

Instead she devotes her energies to the sparkling water in the bay and the beach.

"The water... is soooo beautiful! We went to the glass beach, and realised the name of it comes from the little pieces of broken glass from hundreds of years ago. It is pretty to see all the colours shining with the sun."

Miss Universe's final encounter was with a jewellery maker.

"I bought a necklace from her that will remind me of Guantanamo Bay."

Seeking to clarify the reasons for Ms Mendoza's visit, a statement from Paula M. Shugart, President of the Miss Universe Organisation, was yesterday posted on the blog site.

"The Miss Universe Organization has had a longstanding relationship with the USO (United Service Organizations). All three titleholders (Miss Universe, Miss USA and Miss Teen USA) have participated in many USO goodwill tours to visit the men and women in uniform who serve our country around the world.

"As part of the USO's entertainment program, which boosts the morale of US troops, they have travelled to many locations and many bases around the globe including Iraq, Afghanistan, Japan, Korea and most recently, Guantanamo Bay in Cuba, where the US has maintained a naval base since 1898.

"Dayana Mendoza's comments on her blog were in reference to the hospitality she received while meeting the members of the US military and their families who are stationed in Guantanamo," the statement said.
