Cricket causes $11.1mln loss to Bollywood

MUMBAI: A packed cricket schedule that peaked with an Indian win in the World Cup final has hit the country's other grand passion -- film -- emptying cinemas and forcing studios to postpone big movie releases.

Analysts said business at multiplex cinemas had been weak so far in 2011, with the six-week World Cup that finished earlier this month keeping people glued to their television screens in the evenings.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket tournament, which began immediately afterwards is also expected to keep many cinema-goers away until the end of May.

The short-format Twenty20 competition has all the glitz of Bollywood, with many film stars owning team franchises and big name players from around the world, cheered on by a bevy of scantily clad dancing girls.

The financial newspaper Mint said during the week that multiplex chains may have lost up to 500 million rupees ($11.1 million) in the three months to the end of March. Earnings data is expected in coming weeks.

"It was a weak quarter, with average occupancy rates at theatres declining to between 10 to 12 percent," said Chitrangda Kapur, media analyst with Mumbai-based Angel Broking.

"Due to the World Cup and IPL, fewer films were released from February up to May" said Rajesh Jain, head of media and entertainment at global consultants KPMG.

In the absence of the usual number of weekend movie releases, some multiplex chains even resorted to screening cricket matches to attract audiences.

Alok Tandon, chief executive of Inox Leisure Ltd, said they had no option.

"As we know, February-March is traditionally a period when kids are busy with their exams and families prefer not to go out to watch movies," he said.

"Apart from the movies, cricket is the other religion of our country and hence during this period, very few big banner movies were released.... We screened the semi-final and final, which ran to nearly house-full shows."

The back-to-back cricket tournaments could not have come at a worse time, with the Indian film industry struggling to recover from a prolonged slump.

Overall revenues have fallen 20 percent in the past three years from $2.3 billion in 2008 to $1.85 billion in 2010, according to KPMG research.

Domestic box office revenues still contribute 75 percent of an Indian film's earnings.

Poor quality content, rising overheads, the global economic crisis and an increase in other ways for people to spend their spare time have also been blamed for the downturn.

"The industry just needs one strong story to change the trend," said Devang Sampat, chief India strategist with Cinepolis, the world's fourth-largest multiplex operator globally.

Sampat cited the example of Aamir Khan's "3 Idiots" which broke box office records in 2009, but few releases in 2011 have enjoyed even a fraction of that success.

Hopes are again being pinned on Khan, and his ageing superstar namesakes Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan, to boost box-office sales.

Salman's comedy "Ready" hits theatres in June, while Shah Rukh Khan stars in a sci-fi superhero movie "Ra.One" (Random Access - Version 1.0) and Aamir in "Delhi Belly" later this year.

KPMG's Jain predicted a better second half of the year for the industry.

"We have a good line-up of releases in the forthcoming quarters, including a good list of 3D and regional movies," said Inox's Tandon. "We are quite positive that these movies will do well."

India's World Cup victory breaks Amitabh's superstition

Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan's belief that India loses a cricket match whenever he watches has finally been broken, thanks to the World Cup final that he watched on TV and saw India defeating Sri Lanka.

"Yesterday (Saturday), that age old superstitious finicky belief, that if I were to watch a game it would result disfavourably for us, broken and shattered for good I would imagine," Amitabh posted on his blog www.bigb.bigadda.com late Sunday night.

Amitabh's son Abhishek had admitted recently that they do not watch India's matches, and get constant updates on phone instead, due to the superstition. But neither could resist the temptation of watching the final.

"Yes, I did not see the India-Pakistan (match), I did not see the India-Australia (match), and for most of the time resisted this final too. But I have no idea what prompted me to switch (to) the game on after we were 33 for 2 (sic) and tottering. And when Dhoni smacked that six for victory, it smacked my superstition too out of my life," added Amitabh.

The father-son duo, along Aishwarya Rai, came onto the streets late Saturday night, after the match to celebrate India's victory.

India beat Sri Lanka to win Cricket World Cup 2011

Mahendra Singh Dhoni played a captain's knock and gutsy Gautam Gambhir steered the innings after early jolts to hand India their second World Cup title after 1983, beating Sri Lanka by six wickets at the overflowing Wankhede Stadium here Saturday.

Chasing 275, Dhoni (91 not out) and Gambhir (97) shared 109 runs for the fourth wicket after India made a wobbly start, losing Virender Sehwag in the first over followed by Sachin Tendulkar in the seventh. Both the wickets were taken by fiery Sri Lankan pacer Lasith Malinga.

India completed the chase in 48.2 overs with Dhoni smashing a six off Nuwan Kulasekara, sparking wild celebration in the stadium.

Spain's reign washes away history of pain

Andres Iniesta breaks through Dutch cloggers in extra time to give La Roja their first world title

If it was a Spanish masterpiece you were after, try Las Meninas by Velazquez at the Prado art gallery in Madrid. Or 1896's The First Communion at the Picasso Museum in Barcelona.

Far from a celebration of the beautiful game, Spain's 1-0 extra-time FIFA World Cup 2010 final triumph over an ill-tempered Dutch side more intent on Total Anarchy than Total Football deteriorated into a dreary melodrama salvaged only by a decision at the death.

Prissy petulance. A scarcity of goals. Crude tackles (one chilling challenge saw Nigel de Jong trying to cut Xabi Alonso in half with a chest-high Eric Cantona kung fu kick). More overwrought play-acting than you'd find at a community dinner theatre.

All the ills that soccer's critics use as ammunition in their attacks were on unfortunate display with a television audience of more than 700 million mulling over a change in channel.

If the particularly annoying Arjen Robben -- who really does compromise his obvious quality with peevish behaviour and more of a penchant for falling down than the late former U. S president Gerald Ford -- wasn't waving his arms in despair like some orange chicken in a flux, the woe-is-us Dutch were chasing harassed English referee Harold Webb down the pitch in exasperation.

Webb, a former police officer, handed out tickets as if he were a bobbie on New Year's Eve in London, all tallied up to 14 yellow cards (nine to the Netherlands) one red, to Dutch defender John Heitinga in the 110th minute.

Not that the Spanish were without their irritating Actor's Studio moments, as well.

Only the emotional appearance of 92-year-old South African icon Nelson Mandela following the 45-minute closing ceremonies and a touching gesture from Spain match winner Andres Iniesta to a departed friend pulled the evening out of the gutter.

After volleying home a goal in the 116th minute and sparing 84,000 fans having to stick around an additional half-hour or so for penalties, El Ilusionista ripped off his sweater to display the message 'Dani Jarque siempre con nosotros.'

Which translated means: Dani Jarque is always with us.

Jarque, a Spanish defender and friend of Iniesta's, suffered a heart attack before a pre-season game in Italy in 2009.

"This is for Dani Jarque, for my family, for all of the people,'' Iniesta said afterwards. "It is the result of hard work over a long time and some difficult moments."

Many of those difficult moments occurred Sunday. The Dutch game plan -- they fibbed about trying to aggressively attack the stylized Spanish -- of gumming up the works and then setting off on the counter almost paid off. Twice Robben had great chances, only to be denied by goalkeeper Iker Casillas.

Robben also went ballistic when he felt he'd been tugged back by Spanish defender Carles Puyol on a break, although replays showed the challenge to be slight. There was certainly a lot of bile being spewed, and that stupid habit current players have of indicating that a card should be issued on every illegal tackle was close to being epidemic.

Iniesta personally took the game over in extra time, carving open a stout but flagging Dutch defence, sending Cesc Fabregas in only to have Dutch goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg bravely come out to challenge. Then Iniesta himself was caught too long in possession on a superb opportunity instead of shooting.

In the 116th minute, after Sergio Ramos sailed a free header over the crossbar, Iniesta pounced, played onside by Rafael van der Vaart. The superb Stekelenburg got his right hand to the volley but it had enough power to reach the back of the net.

"I can't quite believe this yet," said Iniesta. "I had the opportunity to score that goal that was so important for my team, and it's incredible. I've made a small contribution in a very tough game, a very rough game -- there were all sorts of things happening on the pitch.

"To win the World Cup -- there are no words to describe it."

There was only one word to describe the game: Disappointing.

"Obviously, we're devastated by the result," said Dutch coach Bert van Marwijk, certainly more gracious in defeat than his players. "We were down to 10 men but almost made it to penalties. You have to say the better team won, but losing the World Cup final is hard to take. Spain created far more chances, but Arjen Robben twice came within inches of scoring for us. If he had, I think we'd have been world champions."

Instead Spain sits atop the world. And rightly so, given the quality and intelligence of their play. The best team won this World Cup, even if the show was far from compelling.

Spain is the Champion, Predicted Paul the Psychic Octopus

Spain will be the 2010 FIFA World Cup Champion, Predicted Paul the Psychic Octopus.

It’s now in the worldwide news that Germany’s Paul, the Psychic Octopus, has predicted Spain to win over the Netherlands in the FIFA World Cup 2010.

Paul made the predictions just an hour ago and it was shown live on German National TV.
It was also televised live in Spain.

For sure, Paul’s prediction adds confidence to Team Spain who’s playing in the World Cup finals for the first time. But of course, it adds pressure to the Netherlands to play their best on Sunday and prove Paul wrong.
Before Paul predicted Spain’s victory over the Netherlands, he already picked between Germany and Uruguay as to who will win in their match for the 3rd place this Saturday.
Paul predicted Germany to win over Uruguay, but is it enough to please the German soccer fans who are hating him a lot?

But the Spanish fans are loving him a lot especially after now that Spain is Paul’s choice to win World Cup 2010.
An article at Times Live (South Africa) says that Spanish Minister Miguel Sebastian is interested in transfering Pulpo Paul to Spain to protect him.

Psychic Paul’s latest prediction is in contrary to Mani The Parakeet, who predicted Netherlands to win over Spain.
Two things are sure now: one of them will suffer for a wrong prediction while the other will continue to enjoy celebrity status.

36 sexily dressed female fans of Holland detained at 2010 fifa world cup 2010

Thirty-six sexily dressed Dutch women were forced out of Soccer City and held in a FIFA office for several hours for wearing an outfit designed by a Dutch beer company.

Peer Swinkels, from Bavaria beer, told The Star last night that his colleagues in South Africa had told him that 36 Dutch women had been arrested after the match between the Netherlands and Denmark for wearing the dress.

He said there was no branding on what has been described as the first real World Cup dress, but it was well known to be part of Bavaria beer in Holland.
But FIFA has said the dress is part of an ambush-marketing campaign it would not allow at matches.
