Deepika to promote sports during Olympics

Actress Deepika Padukone has been approached for a motivational campaign during the 2012 London Olympics to encourage the young generation to take up sports.

"My first love continues to be sports and I would love to do any campaign that encourages people to take up sports in our country," Deepika said in a statement.

Daughter of veteran badminton player Prakash Padukone, Deepika has been a state level badminton player herself. She, however, chose to take up acting as a career.

"Yes, she has been approached. In all meetings, the board has been saying that she is the only one they would like do it because she has a very strong bond with sports," said an official spokesperson from Sports Development Corporation, the board promoting Olympics.

After a successful stint as a model, Deepika ventured into movies with blockbuster "Om Shanti Om" and also featured in hits like "Bachna Ae Haseeno" and "Love Aaj Kal".

The actress has also been approached to become the face of badminton in India.

"When we are looking for a celebrity to promote sports, we need people to believe that if this person can achieve so much at such a young age, so can we. In the case of Deepika, she is a true young achiever. She has achieved so much at such a young age," said the statement.

Deepika Padukone stuck to cycling routine during 'Desi Boyz'

Deepika Padukone reportedly stuck to her exercise regime throughout the strenuous shoot of Desi Boyz.

The actress appears alongside Akshay Kumar and John Abraham in the action film.

A source told Hindustan Times: "Deepika is disciplined. She impressed everyone with her time management to squeeze in space for cycling.

"She didn't skip the routine even when she partied till late in the night or shot for 18 hours a day.

"Deepika was also eating simple and healthy food. And cycling helped her explore London, one of her favourite destinations."

Padukone recently returned to Race 2 after temporarily dropping out due to scheduling clashes with Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani.

She reportedly came back to the production after she was given a pay rise.

Despite her famously disciplined approach to her fitness, the actress recently admitted that she found promoting films "stressful".

Deepika Padukone failed romance to become film?

Deepika Padukone's ex-boyfriend Nihar Pandya is reportedly up for the lead in a film based on the true story of their romance.

Director Prashant Chadha is close friends with Pandya, who he claims the actress left for Ranbir Kapoor.

He told Mumbai Mirror: "Nihar is like my brother. I was very close to Deepika as well once upon a time. In fact, I had launched her in a music video. Everybody knows how she walked out of Nihar's life for Ranbir.

"Nihar was heartbroken. He had done everything by the book. He looked after her for three and a half years. In fact Deepika stayed in Nihar's house with his parents for three years."

Chadha added: "The film starts with Nihar's monologue where he says, 'I loved Deepika and wanted my name to be associated for her for eternity'.

"Nihar then wonders what went wrong. The film then goes into flashback. The film is about Nihar's quest to find out where Romeo went right, and he went wrong in love."

Chadha previously directed Aazaan and Aap Kaa Surroor.

Padukone is currently dating tycoon Vijay Mallya's son Siddharth Mallya, though actor Neil Nitin Mukesh described his relationship with her as "more than friends" in August.

The actress reportedly ditched the film Race 2 because it clashed with a project that co-stars her ex Kapoor.

Deepika Padukone ditches 'Race 2' for Ranbir Kapoor?

Deepika Padukone has reportedly ditched Race 2 because of scheduling clashes over her upcoming project with Ranbir Kapoor.

The actress instead plans to focus on Ayan Mukherji's Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani.

"Race 2 is meant to be shot between January 2012 and June 2012. Saif [Ali Khan], John Abraham, Anil Kapoor and Sonakshi Sinha have allotted dates accordingly," a source told The Times of India.

"However, Deepika is not able to accommodate this film now as the dates of Race 2 and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani are clashing."

It is rumoured that Race 2 producer Ramesh Tamauri is angry over Padukone's decision to choose Kapoor's project.

Padukone and Kapoor dated for over a year, but split when the Rajneeti star began dating actress Katrina Kaif.

In November 2010, Padukone said that she does not hold a grudge against her ex-boyfriend as she is not the one with "regrets" over the ending of the relationship.

Saif Ali Khan recently said that Padukone is one of the few actresses in Bollywood that he is willing to work with after the pair appeared again together in controversial caste drama Aarakshan.

Deepika Padukone 'refuses £1m private dance'

Deepika Padukone has reportedly turned down close to a million pounds to perform a private dance for a London-based family.

The actress can currently be seen in Dum Maaro Dum performing a controversial item number.

A source told Mid Day: "The family who made the offer is extremely rich and wealthy and from Knightsbridge.

"They were ready to pay her a bomb just for one song. The actress initially thought it was a joke, but when the proposal came in form of a letter with the amount cited, she was shocked."

The source added that the family wanted Padukone to perform the dance from the film, while wearing the same outfit.

Padukone admitted she was surprised to receive skirts in the post from fans urging her to cover herself up due to her skimpy outfit seen on screen.

Deepika fails to impress Bipasha

MUMBAI: In spite of the fact that Deepika Padukone's item song in Dum Maaro Dum might be getting mixed response from the audiences and critics, it's clear by now that Deepika's co-actor in the film; Bipasha Basu is not impressed a bit by Deepika's gyrations.

There is a sense of rivalry visible between Bips and Deepika these days, according to reliable sources.
Bipasha considers herself a better item-dancer than Deepika and is downplaying Deepika's latest item number even in front of the press, it is further learnt.

Mallika, Deepika in for item songs

MUMBAI: Hot item songs have become the order of the day, yet again. In between, item songs had gone extinct in Hindi films, but after 'Munni' (Dabangg) and 'Sheila' (Tees Maar Khan), item songs are back and how! In fact, several film-makers attempting masala films are ensuring that there's scope for at least one item number in the film.

What's even more surprising is the fact that the top league actors are more than enthusiastic when it comes to featuring in item songs, looking at the popularity of these numbers.

Mallika Sherawat's 'Razia' from Thank You and Deepika Padukone's 'Dum Maaro Dum' from Dum Maaro Dum have just been released, while David Dhawan has just filmed an item song on Sanju and Lisa Haydon for Rascals and Ready will feature a song on -- you guessed it right -- Salman Khan.

That's not all, there's talk that SRK will feature in an item song in his home-production Always Kabhi Kabhi, directed by Roshan Abbas.

Why everyone is sending short skirts to Deepika?

Deepika Padukone gets unusual gifts from fans. Feels it is a reaction to her raunchy item number
Deepika Padukone gets fan mail delivered to her house on a daily basis. Most of it consists of soft toys, chocolates and greeting cards from fans professing their love for her. However, this time when she returned from her Aarakshan shoot in Bhopal, the actress was shocked to see nine skirts sent to her! This is the first time she has got such gifts.

Different place
A source reveals, "Usually her fan mail is kept in a separate room. So whenever she comes back from outdoor shoots, she personally sits and reads through each one. There are times when she's replied to her fan's letters as well. But nothing prepared her for nine skirts!"The length of the skirts vary. "Some are extremely long, while others are short. She feels these are reactions to her Dum Maro Dum item number.

Cover-up
While some fans might have liked her sexy look, others want her covered up. The lyrics in the song also refer to the skirt (Aaj mere liye chair khich raha hai, kal meri skirt khichega. Khichega ki nahi?).Deepika reacts, "I've just come home. It has just hit me it's all because of Dum Maaro Dum."

Item girl Deepika receives 9 skirts from fans

Receiving gifts like soft toys, chocolates and letters from fans is nothing new for Deepika Padukone. But she wasn't expecting skirts as presents for sure. All thanks to her raunchy avataar in item number Dum Maaro Dum.

"Usually her fan mail is kept in a separate room. So whenever she comes back from outdoor shoots, she personally sits and reads through each one. There are times when she's replied to her fan's letters as well. But nothing prepared her for nine skirts," a source told Mid Day.

Are the skirts as skimpy as in her dance sequence? "Some are extremely long, while others are short. She feels these are reactions to her Dum Maro Dum item number," added the source. Some fans have liked her skimpy skirt while others want her to cover-up.

How has Padukone girl reacted to these unusual gifts? "I've just come home. It has just hit me, it's all because of Dum Maaro Dum," the sexy actress told the tabloid.

Even the lyrics in the song refer to her skirt, Aaj mere liye chair khich raha hai, kal meri skirt khichega, khichega ki nahi.

Deepika roots for Virat Kohli

The petite gal went straight to the Jamtha Stadium from the airport on Saturday afternoon, and then hopped back to the city, in-between the match to attend a press conference, which she wrapped up in almost ten minutes. And then she insisted that TOI accompanies her back to the stadium, so that the interview could be done on the way because she didn't want to miss the last overs of the match. And we settled down to a relaxed tete-a-tete...

Maiden effort
Dressed in an off-white sleeveless top with a matching fedora hat, she left everyone in awe. Ahead of her visit to Nagpur, there was a lot of buzz around her live performance on a sizzling number from Dum Maaro Dum, which was later cancelled. Ask her if she was disappointed, and she candidly replies, "Yes, but at the end of the day, I am glad that I got an opportunity to come here. I am in the middle of the shoot for Aarakshan in Bhopal and with great difficulty I managed to come here. I am someone who believes in rehearsing a lot before coming up on stage, so, I didn't want to do something in a hurry. Hopefully, I will come back soon and perform here."

Bowled over
Ask the actress about her experience in the city, and she can not hide her excitement. "This is my first visit to Nagpur, and I am still waiting to get my hands on some oranges. As soon as we walked on to the ground during the halftime, the crowd went crazy. This is something I will cherish forever." Happy with Bollywood's innovative idea of promoting films at cricket venues, she adds, "'I think cricket and cinema are like religions in our country. So, it's nice to get the two together and hope this combination works." The actress is an ardent supporter of Team India. Ask Deepika about her favourite cricketer, and she says, "Sachin is iconic, but I think among the younger lot, Virat Kohli is extremely talented. I just hope he doesn't lose focus, and if he continues playing the way he does, he has a great future."

Munni and Sheila beware
Grapevine says that her item number in Dum Maaro Dum has all the ingredients to push songs like Munni and Sheila to the background. She laughs and says, "Whether it's a song, an ad or a film, any form of work I do, I want it to be a huge success. But, that's not my sole focus when I am working. I enjoyed dancing on this number and if it becomes as big a hit as Munni and Sheila, then it's great!"

Ask her if there were any apprehension performing on this song, which was originally picturised on Zeenat Aman, and she says, "Not at all, if I'm nervous, how will I perform. If the concept and the song would have been exactly the same like Zeenatji's, then I would have felt the pressure. Rohan's version of the song is completely different and Pritam has modified it a lot. Of course, Zeenatji's version is iconic, and we as youngsters will never forget it."

A few months back Deepika Padukone had stated that she was not interested in item songs. "I have always said that it depends on the script and this song was the demand of the script. I will never say I am not going to do this or that because it really depends on my frame of mind at that point of time," she clarifies.

Grounded star
She is currently shooting for Aarakshan being directed by Prakash Jha, who has a reputation of being a serious taskmaster. Ask Deepika about her experience working with him, and she says, "If you are doing a very serious film and you are joking around on the sets, it can be a distracting factor. But, it doesn't mean that Prakash is a serious man all the time. After the pack-up he's very jovial and a chilled out person and a wonderful host." In Prakash's film, Deepika is sharing screen space with Big B for the first time. And reports claim that she took some tips from Big B... She explains, "I'll be a fool if I didn't. People think he's a very serious and intense person, but I had an amazing time working with him. I was very nervous in front of him in the first few days, but today, I am very comfortable working with him because his presence has a calming effect."

It's my life
Deepika and Sonam Kapoor's joint fun comments aimed at ex-boyfriend Ranbir Kapoor on Karan Johar's show created quite a flutter. Ask her, if she wishes she hadn't said all that in hindsight, and she says, "I'm OK as long as Ranbir and I understand each other. It really doesn't matter what other people say." There are also lots of speculations about her relationship with Sidhartha Mallya, which might bother her at times. Ask her if she would like to clear the air, and she says, "I'm not answerable to anybody! Mere statement dene se kuch badlega toh nahin. Media will say what they want to, so, I would rather keep quiet and watch the drama."

At such a young age, she's under media scrutiny 24x7. Does that make her relationships more vulnerable? She replies, "When you are in the limelight, these are the things you have to be prepared for from the very beginning. You learn to accept the nice things people say and ignore the things, which are not true. I have taught myself to handle the situations sensibly."

Deepika, Sonam face tough consequences for going against Ranbir

Latest reports from the tinsel town confirmed that Deepika Padukone and Sonam Kapoor will not be joining Ranbir Kapoor in his July 2011 world tour. While actresses like Katrina Kaif, Priyanka Chopra, Bipasha Basu and Malaika Arora Khan will be a part of the tour, Deepika and Sonam have been asked to quit.

It may be recalled that Rishi is upset with the two actresses for making rude remarks on his son's character in 'Koffee With Karan Season 3' and he prefers Katrina over Deepika and Sonam.

Rishi Kapoor admitted that it is impossible to bring Deepika-Katrina on board together saying, "Deepika wanted to come along. We didn't want any stress behind the stage. See, as it is, Ranbir has never been on stage. We want it to go smoothly, no backstage jhik-jhik, please!"

Sonam has backed out from the tour as well. Rishi Kapoor explained, "She begged off saying she didn't have a song repertoire to stand on stage with Katrina and Priyanka."

"We start off in the UK, US and Canada. Then after six months we'll go for another lap of the tour. I've done these world tours over and over again. But for Ranbir, the world tour would be a new experience," he added.

Deepika is face of her dad's Olympic Gold Quest

Actress Deepika becomes the face of her father, ace badminton player Prakash Padukone's organisation Olympic Gold Quest (OGQ).

"I am the face of Olympic Gold Quest. I have just come on board. Olympic Gold Quest is training our athletes for the Olympics in 2012," Deepika told IANS in an interview.

Prakash Padukone launched OGQ a few years back with billiards player Geet Sethi. The negligence of the government towards the athletes made them set up the organisation, which is being funded by corporates and individuals to produce some world-class sportsmen.

"Not enough is being done. In the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games, we have proved that there is enough talent in our country. Not enough is being done in terms of promoting the talent," said Deepika.

"Government is not taking enough care of our athletes. That's why my father and Geet Sethi have set up Olympic Gold Quest, which is a non-profit organisation and the funds come from corporate houses. All of us can also contribute individually," Deepika stressed.

"The fund is used to train athletes. Whether it is tennis, badminton, their coaching, OGQ will take care of their equipment, uniforms and whatever else is required," she said.

Sportsmen like Leander Paes, Viswanathan Anand are already on board. Hockey Olympian Viren Rasquinha is the chief executive of OGQ.

Performance in sports also marks a country's development, says Deepika.

"I think the laurels that a sportsperson brings to the country are also a kind of development. Today, when we talk about America or Australia - these are the countries which are very, very popular in sports as well. So, it's not only the economic, political or infrastructural development, even sports can put you up there on the world map," said Deepika.

The actress maintains that the organisation would soon felicitate the Commonwealth and Asian games winners.

"We will be felicitating OGQ athletes, who performed well in the Asian Games and in the Commonwealth Games," said Deepika.

Deepika and Sonam learn from Kareena

Deepika Padukone and Sonam Kapoor have decided not to talk about their personal lives because they feel "it takes away the attention from your work."

Dear New Actresses, if that were true, Kareena Kapoor would not have been the country's No 1 actress. Bebo has never kept her relationship with beau shrouded in secrecy.

Dippy and Sonam rated Kareena Kapoor as the best actress among five other actresses on Koffee With Karan. So girls, next time, just think before you speak. Contradicting yourself in a span of ten minutes doesn't make you seem very bright.

Did Sonam actually admit to her relationship (yes, it is still very much on) with her I Hate Luv Storys director Punit Malhotra?

When Karan asked her if she was single, Sonam's response was: "You know, Karan...." Even KJo was taken aback by her answer.

Deepika Padukone cast in 'Heer and Ranja'

Deepika Padukone will star alongside Shahid Kapoor in Sabbir Khan's Heer and Ranja.

After casting Kapoor as Ranja, Khan said she felt that Padukone was the first choice for the role of Heer.

"I felt that the Heer's part needed somebody who is young and dynamic," said Khan.

"I just couldn't see anybody beyond Deepika for the role, as I feel that she is one of the finest female actors among the Gen-Next's brigade."

The director expressed her excitement at casting the pair together and said that the decision to do so had been unanimous.

"Everybody is excited to see the pair together," she added.

Shooting of the musical romantic comedy will begin in April 2011.

I want to be a classic heroine

Deepika Padukone has revealed that she's always wanted to play a classic Bollywood heroine.
The actress is to take on Sharmila Tagore's role in a remake of the 1971 blockbuster Amar Prem, New Kerala has reported.

In an interview with the site, she said: "I want to do a classic Hindi-film heroine's part. That's my true calling. I'm really looking forward to it."

Padukone added that she had bonded with former Break Ke Baad co-star Tagore, who the former described as "one of the most elegant ladies" she has ever met.

Kat, Deepika book Ranbir!

Mumbai temperatures in July 2011 will dip to an all-time low.

Three of Bollywood's hottest girls — Katrina Kaif (the leader of the brigade), Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone — are likely to accompany Bollywood's young box office Prince, Ranbir Kapoor, on a world tour.

In the last couple of years, Ranbir's popularity in the overseas market has risen to several degrees. Trade analyst Amod Mehra confirms that, "Prakash Jha's Raajneeti did such good business abroad only because of Ranbir and Katrina. He is a huge draw with the NRIs."

Even unknown to most people, Rishi Kapoor has been getting offers for a world tour featuring his superstar son for the last couple of years. However, Rishi has steered clear of temptation and didn't want Ranbir to travel on a world concert till such time as the young actor has enough chartbusters to bring the concert venues down!
It is being suggested that the world tour is scheduled for July 2011 because it can then feature the chartbusters from several Ranbir films including Bachna Aye Haseeno, Wake Up Sid, Anjaana Anjaani and even Imtiaz Ali's Rock Star. It is said that the organisers want the Kapoor scion to be accompanied on this tour by his leading ladies Katrina, Priyanka and Deepika.

A source from overseas says, "Such is the craze for Ranbir and his teen deviyaan show that the non-resident Indians are already making enquiries about it."

Padukone's ex Pandya 'dating Khan'

Deepika Padukone's ex-boyfriend Nihar Pandya now has another actress girlfriend, according to Mid Day.

The aspiring actor is apparently dating model-turned-actress Gauhar Khan, who was last seen in Rocket Singh.

Sources have suggested that the duo have been spotted together several times.

Padukone's other ex-boyfriend Ranbir Kapoor is also allegedly in a relationship with an actress - Katrina Kaif.

Padukone and Kapoor 'put grudge aside'

Deepika Padukone may have to patch up her relationship with Kareena Kapoor, according to reports.

Mid Day says that the younger actress, 24, has been approached to appear in Agent Vinod, which stars Kapoor in the lead female role.

In the past, it has been suggested that the two do not get along with each other.

Rumours have claimed that they fell out when Padukone was chosen for the female lead over Kapoor for Saif Ali Khan's debut production Love Aaj Kal.

"Even though it's a second lead, the character plays an important role. Saif (Kapoor's boyfriend) is extremely professional as a producer and will cast the actor who will do proper justice to the role. And while Kareena and Deepika aren't friends, that will not come in the way of casting," a source revealed.
